About Chess

Chess is a two-player strategy game played on an 8x8 grid of 64 squares.

chess board

Each player controls an army of 16 pieces and the goal is to checkmate the opponent's king.

The pieces are as follows.

The Pawn

Moves 1 square forward, 2 on its first move. Captures diagonally & promotes upon reaching the board's end.

The pawn symbolizes growth and patience, advancing step by step and sacrificing for the greater good. It embodies life’s struggles and triumphs, encouraging meaningful moves.

The Knight

Moves in an "L" shape: two squares in one direction and one square perpendicular. Knights can jump over other pieces!

The knight’s erratic path on the chessboard defies norms, urging us to embrace creativity. Its fearless leaps symbolize courage and unconventional choices. Ultimately, the knight embodies our quest for meaning and purpose.

The Bishop

Only moves diagonally across the board, staying on the same colored square.

The bishop’s diagonal movement represents seeking higher truths and inner wisdom, navigating contrasts in life’s journey.

The Rook

Moves horizontally or vertically any number of squares. It's a powerful piece that controls open files and ranks.

The rook teaches adaptability and strategic movement, protecting what matters while remaining flexible.

The Queen

Moves horizontally, vertically, or diagonally any number of squares. She combines the power of the rook and the bishop.

The queen embodies grace and authority, teaching balance and empathy. Her strategic moves reflect leadership that values multiple perspectives.

The King

Moves one square in any direction. The king is the heart of the kingdom, representing protection, vulnerability, and wisdom.

The king represents leadership and responsibility, guiding by example and valuing counsel. His survival signifies the importance of unity and sacrifice.
